Cold Storage WIFI & Warehouse Management System Deployment

Challenge

Trucell was tasked with transforming a cold storage facility. From a manual warehouse location management system to a fully digital Warehouse Management System (WMS). This project included redesigning the entire warehouse system and implementing a reliable WIFI network. Where it should be capable of operating in temperatures as low as -10°C, with coverage extending to insulated rooms with aluminium shielding.

Solutions

Given the challenging environment, we strategically placed access points. To ensure consistent connectivity across high-access areas despite the warehouse being fully operational during the deployment. To overcome the cold and stacked environments, we collaborated with Cipherlab to source barcode scanners that are both waterproof and cold-resistant. These scanners, supported by mobile docks and charging stations, are integrated seamlessly into the new scanning platform for workforce efficiency.

Optimized Cold Storage WIFI Design for Maximum Connectivity

This WIFI design demonstrates Trucell’s expertise in delivering seamless connectivity for cold storage facilities. Each access point is strategically placed to ensure robust coverage in -10°C environments, even though insulated, aluminium-shielded rooms. Trucell’s tailored solutions guarantee reliable performance in challenging conditions, supporting continuous warehouse operations and optimized workflow management with proactive IT support.

Strategically Positioned Access Points in Cold Storage Facility

Due to the stacked and dense arrangement of goods, strategic access point placement was critical to ensure full connectivity coverage. Trucell designed the network to overcome these challenges. To ensure seamless WIFI performance throughout the facility, despite the physical obstacles posed by shelving and storage layout.

High-Distance Network Installation for Cold Storage Facility

Trucell’s installation of an enterprise-grade switch and RPS (Redundant Power Supply) in a cold storage facility, with cable runs exceeding 100 meters. The switch terminates multiple WIFI access points, ensuring reliable connectivity throughout the warehouse. The setup is linked via 10Gbps fiber back to the main communications room, delivering high-speed data transfer and supporting efficient operations in the challenging environment of cold storage logistics.

Docking Station for CipherLab Barcode Scanners

Docking station setup for multiple CipherLab barcode readers, designed to keep devices charged and ready for high-usage environments. The docking station also includes slots for spare batteries, ensuring uninterrupted operation during peak warehouse activities. Trucell’s solution ensures that the barcode readers are always ready for use, supporting efficient workflows in demanding logistics and cold storage environments.

The rugged design and user-friendly interface highlight the scanner’s suitability for demanding environments, such as cold storage or high-traffic warehouses. Trucell leverages CipherLab scanners to streamline warehouse operations, ensuring reliable performance in extreme conditions with rapid deployment capabilities to enhance workflow efficiency.

Mobile Device Management (MDM) system Implementation

Additionally, we implemented a Mobile Device Management (MDM) system, preventing loss or theft. Trucell partnered with PowerOne to install data cabling and fibre across the facility, with long cable runs and fibre terminations reaching all areas. The network upgrade included a 10Gbps backbone.

Trucell also facilitated a cost-saving upgrade to Fiber 1000 internet, which reduced monthly recurring revenue (MRR) costs by nearly $500. To streamline communication, we deployed a unified phone system, linking mobile workers, truck drivers, and packing staff across the facility. The migration of legacy on-premise servers to the cloud ensured continued access to essential applications during the transition to the new WMS software.

Outcome

Key challenges included ensuring correct access point placement in the stacked fridges, overcoming legacy infrastructure, long cable runs, and managing the project’s impact on daily operations. The project was completed successfully, providing robust, water-tight WIFI coverage and a seamless transition to the new warehouse management system without disrupting operations.
